| His Holiness the Sakya Trizin, Dagmo
Kusho La, Dungsay Gyana Vajra Rinpoche, myself and other members of
entourage left for Delhi on the morning of 25th May 2000 from Dehradun.
There coincidentally, we had an audience with His Holiness The Dalai
Lama, as we happened to be in the same hotel. That very evening, we
flew to France and reached there the next morning.
At the Charles de' Gaulle airport, Mrs. Kunsang D. Yuthok, the
representative of H.H. the Dalai Lama in France, resident Sakya
teacher of Europe - Lama Sherab Galtsen Amipa, and Lama Dakpa, plus
members of the Sakya Kunga Ling Centre were all present to welcome
us.
During our five days stay in Paris, we visited the Rigpa Centre
where His Holiness gave preliminary teachings, initiations and explanations
on a sadhana to about three hundred students. He also gave refuge
vows to many new followers too and was invited to the Pagoda Buddhist
Temple by the representative of H.H. the Dalai Lama. There, about
three hundred Tibetan residents received his audience and advisory
speech. As His Eminence Chogey Trichen Rinpoche was touring in France,
Raphael, a dharma student, invited all of us for a lunch at her
house during which His Holiness spent sometime with His Eminence.
His Holiness also met with Sogyal Rinpoche, and the resident Sakya
teacher of Europe, Lama Tashi Dorje.
On the 31st, we went to London and reached the Heathrow Airport
where we were received by Mr. Migyur Dorje, the representative of
His Holiness the Dalai Lama in United Kingdom, Phuntsok Wangyal,
the director of Tibet Foundation and other dharma students. We headed
to Dr. Alex Hooi's residence and where we stayed during our visit
to London. That evening, we visited the peace garden and performed
a consecration ritual and other prayers at the stone carved Mandala
there.
The next day, we visited the Sakya Thupten Ling centre in Bournemouth
and consecrated it. Later in the evening, His Holiness gave an elaborate
Dharma talk to a gathering of about a thousand people. At Sagar
Lama's house the next day, His Holiness gave audience and also performed
a puja. He also consecrated the Sakya Ling centre in Reading.
That evening, His Holiness was invited as the chief guest to inaugurate
the fifteenth anniversary celebration of the Tibet foundation at
Sweden Borg. His Holiness gave a speech on how the foundation had
immensely served Tibetan Buddhism and culture. For the next two
days, he gave preliminary teachings, refuge vows and initiation
at the Rigpa Centre in London. He visited the Kagyu Dzong centre
and performed consecration.
On 5th June, we flew to New York and reached the J.F.K. Airport
where we were received by Mr. Ngawang Rabgey, the representative
of H.H. the Dalai Lama in North America, resident Lamas of Sakya
centres and other dharma followers. We stayed at Hyatt.
During our eight day stay in New York, His Holiness visited Palden
Sakya Centre in New Jersey and did a consecration puja there. The
resident Sakya teacher Lama Pema offered Mandala and three symbols
with long life ritual. Reception was held at Harvard Club hall where
His Holiness gave a speech in English and Tibetan. During this speech,
he talked about the importance and benefits of Pema Tsal (Lotus
Grove) school in India and Nepal which were set up by Lama Pema.
His Holiness gave two-day empowerments at Japan Buddhist Temple.
He gave long life initiation and advisory speech to Tibetans who
had come to seek his audience. He also gave Boddhichita vows according
to the Madhyamika tradition to many people at Columbia University.
That night, we stayed at Mr. Shou Ling's house. For the next two
days, His Holiness performed rituals for deceased people and gave
empowerments to large number of people at Chung Yang Temple too.
This event was jointly organized by Sakya centre and Chung Yang
monastery.
His Holiness gave initiation and elaborate advisory speech to
two thousand Tibetans at Alfred Learner Hall where the celebrations
were held for the 60th anniversary of His Holiness Dalai Lama's
enthronement. This was organized jointly by representative of H.H.
the Dalai Lama and Sakya Centre. Tibetan Sakya followers had organized
a dinner for him at the Trinity school hall where many other Tibetans
also joined him. There he gave elaborate advisory speech too. His
Holiness was also invited to Kagyu Thupten Choeling retreat centre
where he performed consecration and gave an initiation. Then he
gave an initiation to about three hundred people at Taiwan Centre
in New York.
On 13th June, we flew to Boston. The resident Sakya teacher Lama
Migmar of the Boston Sakya centre and other dharma students at the
airport received His Holiness. We stayed at Charles Chung's house
for four days. During this period, His Holiness gave teachings on
The Parting from the Four Attachments and other empowerments at
Dharmadatu Centre. Also at the same centre, he gave initiation and
advisory speech to large number of Tibetans.
On 17th June, we flew to Washington where Lodroe Gyari, the Special
Envoy of H.H. the Dalai Lama, resident Sakya teacher Lama Kalsang
Gyaltsen of Sakya Phuntsok Ling and others received His Holiness
at the airport. We were welcomed at Sakya Phuntsok Ling Centre in
traditional Tibetan way with the offering of Mandala and long life
puja known as Neten Chag Chod. That afternoon, His Holiness gave
initiation and advisory speech to few hundred Tibetans and Westerners
at nearby Vietnamese Temple.
During our stay at Sakya Phuntsok Ling, His Holiness gave empowerment,
explanation on Sadhana and long life initiation etc. On 19th, His
Holiness went to Hyatt Hotel in Washington D.C. to receive His Holiness
the Dalai Lama. At that time, he also met H.H. Penor Rinpoche.
On 23rd morning, we along with the members of the Sakya Phuntsok
Ling performed an elaborate long life ritual after which His Holiness
seated on the throne. Then we began to chant the ritual requesting
His Holiness's long life. During the ritual we offered mandala,
three symbols and other auspicious objects to His Holiness.
After that His Holiness was invited to the inauguration of the
year 2000 Smithsonian Folk Life Festival where many Tibetan artifacts
were displayed and cultural programs were performed. He did the
auspicious prayers along with the monks from the Namgyal Monastery
(H.H. Dalai Lama's private Monastery), and later gave a speech in
English. At that time the Mayor of the Washington D.C. and many
other important guests were present. His Holiness also visited the
countryside of the State of Virginia.
On the 24th, we flew to Minneapolis. Members of the Sakya Thupten
Dhargey Ling Centre received His Holiness at the airport. We stayed
at Dr. Nanda Yueh's house for a few days. During these days, His
Holiness gave long life initiation and teachings to many Tibetans
and Westerners at a Vietnamese Temple. He visited the Mayo Clinic
for a checkup where the doctor told him that he was in very good
health. It was indeed very good news for all of us.
On the 29th of June, we flew to Vancouver, Canada. H.E. Jetsun
Kusho, Sey Kusho, Victoria's resident Sakya teacher Geshey Tashi
Namgyal and others received His Holiness at the airport. There we
stayed at H.E. Jetsun Kusho's residence for more then six weeks.
On the 1st of July, as requested by H.E. Jetsun Kusho and her
center Sakya Tsechen Thupten Ling, His Holiness started the precious
and profound Lamdre Lobshey teachings by giving long life initiation.
Many people received the sacred and secret Lamdre Lobshey teaching.
Lamas, monks and nuns numbered about twenty and another near two
hundred lay students from many countries gathered at the University
of British Columbia, Vancouver to attend the teachings.
During the teachings, at times Lama Pema Wangdak was serving His
Holiness as his English translator. Mr. Jimmy Ma translated the
whole Lamdre Lobshey teaching into Chinese simultaneously too. In
the afternoons, Dungsay Gyana Vajra Rinpoche and myself led the
meditation sessions. Lama Kalsang Gyaltsen helped translate into
English while Mr. Jimmy Ma translated into Chinese simultaneously.
During the Lamdre, His Holiness visited Sea to Sky Retreat Center
near Whistler. He also gave other initiations too. On 5th July,
we celebrated Dungsay Gyana Vajra Rinpoche's birthday by reciting
his long life prayer several times and offered khata (Tibetan scarf)
to him. On 6th, we celebrated His Holiness the Dalai Lama's birthday
by reciting his long life prayer. His Holiness and other Lamdre
participants offered khata to his picture.
Dungsay Zaya Vajra Rinpoche, Dungsay Sadu Vajra Rinpoche and Dagmo
Kushos came from Seattle to offer Mandala and three symbols to His
Holiness while we recited long life prayers for His Holiness during
the Lamdre. They offered tea and snacks to all the Lamdre participants.
Similar long life ceremonies were also held and tea and snack offerings
were made to the participants almost everyday during the Lamdre
teachings. Many devotees also made offerings to His Holiness and
the Sangha members too. His Holiness also performed many house blessings
and gave long life initiations for Tibetans and an advisory speech.
He also gave advisory speech to the Lamdre followers too.
On the morning of 14th August, we performed the long life ritual
and conducted a musical procession to invite His Holiness to the
shrine hall. When he was seated on his throne, we began to chant
the ritual requesting His Holiness' long life. During the actual
request for His Holiness' long life, I offered the Mandala, the
symbols of the holy body, voice, mind, qualities and activities
with the explanations on behalf of the Lamdre organizer. Then all
the fortunate Lamdre disciples offered khatas and offerings to His
Holiness.
Later Dungsay Gyana Vajra Rinpoche offered the seven possession
of a universal emperor, eight auspicious signs with explanations
of each on behalf of the Lamdre organizer. Ani Kunga Choedon and
Mr. Jimmy Ma translated the above-mentioned explanations of Dungsay
Gyana Vajra Rinpoche and myself into English and Chinese simultaneously.
H. E. Jetsun Kusho gave thanks giving speech and then gave presents
to Lamdre organizer Jin Yeo and others. In the afternoon we all
performed Tsog offerings and finally the program was fruitfully
successfully concluded with the recitation of auspicious prayers.
We all were very fortunate to receive this precious teaching.
With a very detailed explanation from His Holiness, it was very
easy to understand. On 15th morning, His Holiness gave initiation
to Jetsun Kusho's family in her home. That afternoon His Holiness
performed a ritual at Sakya Tsechen Thupten Ling.
On the 16th, we went to Seattle by car. There Dungsay Manju Vajra
Rinpoche, Dungsay Anand Vajra Rinpoche Dungsay Mati Vajra Rinpoche
and their mother Dagmo Kusho received His Holiness.
Later we headed to Sakya Thegchen Choeling where His Holiness
met H.H. Dagchen Rinpoche and exchanged greetings and khatas. The
other members of the Phuntsok Phodrang family and the members of
their center were also there to receive and offer khatas to His
Holiness. During this reunion of the two Phodrangs (Palace) His
Holiness and H.H. Dagchen Rinpoche gave speeches.
At that time there were eleven Khondung Rinpoches, six Jetsunmas,
six Dagmo Kusho, other relatives of the two Phodrangs and Dharma
friends present. All the sons, girls, wife's of the sons of the
Khon family are called Dungsay Rinpoches, Jetsunmas and Dagmo Kushos
respectively. Then we were invited to a dinner at Phuntsok Phodrang.
We stayed at Dungsay Zaya Vajra Rinpoche's residence. During our
stays in Seattle, His Holiness had a question and answer session
with the senior members of the Sakya Thegchen Choeling. He gave
initiations to over hundred disciples at Sakya Thegchen Choeling
temple. Dungsay Anand Vajra Rinpoche and Dungsay Sadu Vajra Rinpoche
also invited him to dinner at their respective residences.
On the 19th, His Holiness visited Dhongthok Tulku Rinpoche's center
Sapan Shedrub Ling which is also in Seattle. There he gave initiation
to many disciples. That evening resident Sakya teacher Geshey Jamyang
Tsultrim from Olympia came to receive His Holiness and so we went
together to Olympia. The next morning, His Holiness gave initiation
and refuge vows to members of Nalanda Institute. Same day, Ani Gilda
Taylor resident Sakya teacher of the Ogyen Choegye Choe Dzod Ling
centre came from Oregon to escort His Holiness there.
During our stay in Oregon, His Holiness gave initiation and explanation
on sadhana. He also had a conference with the Dharma teacher from
different Buddhist center. His Holiness gave a talk to few hundred
Tibetans who lived in that region. The members of Sakya Do Ngag
Choling and its resident teacher Lama Jamyang Lodoe also invited
His Holiness to a lunch while he was in Portland.
On the 23rd we flew to San Francisco. The Resident sakya teacher
Lama Kunga Rinpoche and other Dharma students received us. We stayed
at Ewam Choden Center. His Holiness gave a talk on Spirituality
in the age of the Internet there. He also gave empowerment and initiation
to many disciples. The local Tibetan residents presented a cultural
show to His Holiness, during which he gave the Tibetan gathering
an advisory speech.
On the 26th, we flew to Los Angeles. Lama Lobsang Drakpa and other
disciples received us at the airport. We stayed at Mr. Yuan Ma's
resident. During our stay His Holiness gave initiations and Dharma
talks on preliminary teaching etc. His Holiness also visited the
Nyingma Center there. He gave initiations to resident Lama Choedrak
Gyatso and members of the centre too.
On the 29th, we flew to Singapore via Japan. Our residents teachers,
Lama Dorje and Sengey and about hundred disciples welcomed us at
the Changi Airport. We stayed at Sakya Tenphel Ling Center. During
our stay there, His Holiness bestowed empowerments, initiations,
mind training teachings and other teachings to his students. He
consecrated the main shrine of centre too. The centre members made
long life offerings to His Holiness. During the visit, His Holiness
had a breakfast meeting with H. H. the Gaden Tripa as requested
by some devotees.
On the 6th of September, we flew to Delhi. There many people had
come to welcome us including the Director of Sakya Centre, Dehradun,
Lama Jamyang Legshey la. The next day we headed for Rajpur. There
the members of Sakya community and other Tibetans then accorded
us a grand ceremonial welcome.
Over all this tour was a highly successful one during which many
students received the blessed and precious teaching of Lord Buddha
from His Holiness Sakya Trizin. During this tour many were newly
introduced to Buddhism and undertook vows or refuge while others
who were dharma practitioners reaffirmed their faith in Buddha and
deepened their resolve to be enlightened for the sake of all sentient
beings. The tour was well organized and coordinated. Many centres
and people put a lot of effort behind it to make it a success. May
the merit generated by this whole exercise benefit all sentient
beings.
