The Patrons of the International Buddhist Academy are His Holiness
Sakya Trizin and the Venerable Khenpo Appey Rinpoche.
His Holiness was born into the noble Sakya Khon family of Tibet,
which has led Sakya monastery and its religious traditions for
over
nine hundred years. In his youth His Holiness received many teachings
on the Vajrayana, Buddhist philosophy, and the other traditional
fields of knowledge from many eminent teachers, including Dampa
Rinpoche. His Holiness is distinguished among great lamas by the
vast amount of teachings he has received. He spends most of his time
in practicing the Dharma, and he has completed many solitary retreats.
He has also taught extensively
in both Asia and the West, generously bestowing for the benefit
of living beings such major sets of initiations and instructions
as the Collection of Tantras, Collection of Sadhanas, and the
Path with Its result (Lam Dre).

Khenpo Appey Rinpoche has received his training
in the non-Tantric scholastic and literary studies under such
famous
scholars as the Dzongsar seminary master Dagyab Lodro. He also
received instructions in the profound Vajrayana from great masters
including
Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro and Dezhung Ajam Rinpoche. He taught
in several seminaries of Tibet and India. After coming to Nepal,
he began the work of establishing the International Buddhist Academy,
which is dedicated to making the great Buddhist tradition of rigorous
scholarship and soundly based practice accessible to foreign students.
As the school is very new, it is still not yet fully equipped.
For example, it needs more books to complete its libraries for
the
students, teachers and translators. We also need ongoing support
for our project of converting rare Dharma texts into computerized
form in order to publish and distribute them - for the sake of preserving
them. Another major IBA activity will be the translating of
Dharma texts that are currently available only in Tibetan. Our translators
and teachers require financial support to allow them to devote themselves
to study, research and translation, which will greatly benefit students
of the Dharma.
The cost of a three-month semester is US$615 for students in residence
(including full board). Non-residential students pay only $200 per
semester.
Students desiring to begin studies at the academy should send a
completed application form together with a letter of recommendation.
This letter can be from a Buddhist Centre or Buddhist teacher,
or from an educational institution. Early applications are encouraged.
In any case we request them, if possible, no later than two months
before the start of the semester. Application forms are available
here. Additional forms can
be acquired from the address located in the Contact
Info section,
to which questions may also
be sent.
